March 7, 2024: The Maharashtra government has announced the launch of a pod taxi service between Bandra and Kurla Railway Stations to ease commuting to the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), mentioned a release from the chief minister’s office.
As per the official statement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved a pod taxi service that will cover an 8.8 km route.
To be implemented under the public private partnership (PPP), the pods will have a capacity of six passengers each and will have 38 halts. It will run at 40 km/hr.
Pod taxis are driverless public transport systems that are used in many places worldwide to decongest the business districts.
Mumbai is growing high on infrastructure with the development of landmark link roads such as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Road that connects Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, the Mumbai Coastal Road that will reduce travel time between South Mumbai and Western Suburbs to 40 minutes. The city has seen the construction and inauguration of many flyovers that decongest the road traffic and reduce travel time. With projects such as the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR), the Mumbai Metro 3, Mumbai Delhi Expressway, the Mumbai Nagpur Expressway, the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Third Mumbai that are being developed, the city is inching towards competing with world-class infrastructure and creating a positive impact on the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai real estate.
