Property tax defaulters with dues over Rs 25 L to face action: MCD

Non-submission of correct property tax dues will lead to action in accordance with the Municipal Act, the authority said.

November 28, 2023: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will start prosecution against property tax evaders whose dues are above Rs 25 lakh, according to an official statement. The authority, citing the Municipal Act, said that the onus to file self-assessment property tax returns lies solely on property owners. It has warned legal action and prosecution against the property tax defaulters.

After analysing data relating to property tax dues, the MCD has recognised owners whose property tax dues are above Rs 25 lakh. According to the municipal act, if the property tax dues exceed Rs 25 lakh, it may lead to punishment such as imprisonment from three months to seven years with a fine of not less than 50% of the amount of the tax evaded. Property tax details for authorised, unauthorised regularised, unauthorised colonies and residential properties larger than 100 square metre in rural communities are mentioned on the MCD’s official website.

The authority has clarified that details of certain properties that are not found on the website pertain to property owners not paying any tax. They can obtain their Unique Property Identification Code (UPIC) before December 31, 2023, through the MCD’s e-portal. Non-submission of correct property tax dues will lead to action in accordance with the Municipal Act, it said.

After matching its property tax database with a third party’s data, such as property registration, electricity bills, GST registration, and licensing registration, the MCD has prepared databases of properties that are not paying property tax.
