March 20, 2024: To boost public transportation infrastructure, the Rajasthan government plans to extend metro services to other cities across the state. It intends to change the Jaipur Metro Railway Corporation Limited (JMRCL) into the Rajasthan Metro Railway Corporation Limited, according to media reports.
According to authorities at the Urban Development and Housing (UDH) department, which supervises JMRCL, the move is part of the government’s ambitious 100-day plan. The government intends to introduce metro services in various cities. Rather than establishing individual metro corporations for each city, the plan is to streamline operations under a unified state-level entity, a senior UDH official said, as cited in a TOI report.
The government plans to extend metro services to major cities such as Udaipur, Jodhpur and Kota. However, no decision has yet been taken on the proposed cities or towns where metro services will be introduced.
As per reports, the government continues to prioritise the Jaipur Metro Line 2, which will connect Sitapura and Ambabari. However, it will first concentrate on the extension works of both sides of Line 1.
By consolidating metro operations under a single institution, the administration expected to expedite planning, execution, and maintenance processes, resulting in seamless connections and enhanced mobility alternatives for Rajasthan citizens.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma discussed the new phase of the metro with JMRC officials and instructed them to create a new Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the extension from Sitapura to Ambabadi and Vidyadhar Nagar.
