RRTS bridge is Delhi’s 25th on 22 km stretch of Yamuna

The new bridge will link the RRTS stations of Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar.

December 27, 2023: The construction of a 1.6-kilometre-long bridge over the Yamuna River for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) corridor has been completed, an official of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) said, according to a TOI report.

The new bridge will link the RRTS stations of Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar, running parallel of the DND flyover. As cited in the TOI report, an NCRTC official said that a bridge over the mainstream of the Yamuna River has been constructed. It has a total length of 1.6 km. Of this, the length of the bridge built over the river is around 626 metre and the remaining is over the Khadar area on both sides.

This is the 25th bridge to be developed in the 22-km stretch of the Yamuna River from Wazirabad barrage and Okhla Barrage, according to data compiled by the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People (SANDRP) as stated in the report.

To construct the RRTS bridge, 32 pillars were built over which the viaduct was constructed with the help of box girders and launching gantry. The report cited a senior official stating that the NCRTC faced many challenges to construct this bridge over the river. Laying the foundation was a complex process. Monsoon and flood in the river this year further added to the challenges. He added that the NCRTC had used the Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology to finalise its stations and structure designs. Through this technology, a 3D model of the bridge was created. It played a crucial role in completing the construction process with ease and efficiency.
