RRTS to cut CO2 emissions, NCRTC installs solar power plant

The power plant will meet the requirement of the at Duhai Depot and other RRTS operations.

July 10, 2023: The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has set up 585 Kilowatt peak (kWp) capacity solar power plant at the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Depot in Duhai. The solar power plant will have an estimated lifespan of 25 years. It is projected to generate around 6,66,000 units of solar energy per year. The power plant is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 615 tonnes annually, contributing to a reduction of about 15,375 tonnes in its lifetime.

Further, 25,000 solar panels will be installed at 25 stations and two major depots in Duhai and Modipuram (Meerut).

Benefits of the solar power plant set up at Duhai Depot

The solar power plant installed at the Duhai Depot will meet the requirement of the depot and have a surplus to use in other RRTS operations. This makes the Duhai Depot a Green Depot. The plant will be monitored and optimised using an advanced cloud-based application. The application will track the solar energy produced by the plant on a regular basis. This new technology will boost transparency and ensure efficient management of the solar energy infrastructure.

According to officials, the RRTS project will help reduce CO2 emissions once fully operational by taking nearly 1.5 lakh private automobiles off the roads. This will also help decongest the roads in the National Capital Region (NCR).

NCRTC’s focus on National Solar Mission

India’s first RRTS corridor, connecting Delhi to Meerut via Ghaziabad, has been designed to save fuel and reduce air pollution as the NCRTC will cover 70 per cent of the total energy requirement of the corridor through solar energy. NCRTC is a joint venture company of the Indian Government and the states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

According to the solar policy adopted by NRCTC in March 2021, the company will raise the share of renewable energy by generating nearly 11-megawatt peak in-house solar power on rooftop stations, depots and other structures for non-traction purposes in the next five years. The initiative is in line with Prime minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Net Zero Carbon Emission’ plan.

The 17-km priority section of the 82-km RRTS corridor from Sahibabad to Duhai Depot in Ghaziabad has been almost completed and will be inaugurated soon.
