July 10,2023: Effective today, July 10, 2023, the Tamil Nadu state government has revised the registration and stamp duty of 20 services including document registration, searching of registers, preservation of documents to be registered, custody and return of documents with respect to power of attorney (PoA).
These are services under section Section 78 of the Registration Act, 1908. Note that the Tamil Nadu government had not revised the fees for these services that the registration department provides for around 20 years.
As per the statement released by the state registration department, under the new rates, the fees for issuing or transferring power of attorney (PoA) to non-family members has been increased to 1% of the property’s guideline value. Before the hike, it was Rs 10,000 per document. The charges for private attendance by sub-registrar at a residence for individual plot registration is now Rs 1,000 from Rs 200.
The registration fee for receipt of documents is now Rs 200. Previously, it was Rs 20. The registration fee for family settlement, partition and release of the documents is now Rs 10,000 as opposed to Rs 4,000 mentioned previously. The maximum stamp duty to be paid for partition, family settlement and release of documents is now Rs 40,000 as against Rs 25,000 to be paid before.
