January 5, 2024: The tunnelling work for the underground section of Agra Metro from Taj Mahal eastern gate to Jama Masjid has been completed and the testing was successfully conducted on December 30, 2023, as per a TOI report. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the six-kilometre section towards February-end, according to media reports.
The metro corridor is being developed in the city, covering 30 km. The priority line will cover three km of elevated stretch and three km of underground track. Work on the priority section was completed in 11 months.
As cited by an IANS report, an official said that building an underground metro station and tunnelling work takes thrice as long compared to elevated stations. The Agra Metro project did this in a record time of 11 months, including the tunnel construction through TBM, Track work and entire third rail laying work and signalling work to ensure smooth and safe train movement.
As per the TOI report, Sushil Kumar, Managing Director, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) termed this as a major achievement and an example of great coordination shown by civil, track, signalling, E&M and telecom team.
As per a UPMRC statement, the train testing will now be conducted on the entire priority section which is getting ready to be opened for public. The systems and signalling work will also be completed next month.
The Agra metro project is being implemented and developed by the Uttar Pradesh Rail Metro Corporation (UPMRC) at an estimated cost of Rs 8,379 crore. Prime minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation of the Agra Metro Rail on December 7, 2020.
