Set to be operational in around four months, Namma Metro’s Whitefield – Byappanahalli section will improve the Metro connectivity in Bangalore for commuters. However, once operational, train frequency, particularly on the Purple line, may be reduced owing to the shortage of trains. The 18.1-km Purple line connects Baiyyappanahalli in the east with Kengeri in the southwest.
Currently, 56 km of the Namma Metro network in Bangalore is operational, and the 3 km Nagasandra- Madavara section will be completed later. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is planning to commission the entire 15-km stretch of the Byappanahalli to Whitefield metro line by June 2023 and the 1.3-km Kengeri to Challaghatta section by May 2023. This will take the total length of the Metro network to 75.3 km.
The 19-km RV Road to Bommasandra Yellow Line is also expected to be completed by June 2023.
Currently, trains operate at a frequency of 4.5 minutes on the Purple line and 5 minutes on the Green line during peak hours. The frequency is 8 to 10 minutes during non-peak hours. Further, the BMRCL can provide end-to-end service up to Kengeri (Purple Line) and Silk Institute (Green Line) only during non-peak hours. While there are plans for service growth and extension, the BMRCL is now facing severe train shortage.
According to BMRCL, it should ideally have one train per kilometre to maintain a healthy frequency of 3 to 4 minutes. Under Phase 1, it had 50 trains for 45 km. Once the 15-km Whitefield Metro route is fully operational, the total network will extend to over 70 km. As there are only 57 trains, the frequency will be reduced.
