UP emerges as the state with maximum cities with metro facilities

The UPMRC is undertaking the development of Agra Metro and Meerut Metro.

April 24, 2024: Uttar Pradesh has witnessed new infrastructure developments under the leadership of chief minister Yogi Adityanath. The launch of new expressways and the construction and expansion of new and existing roads has increased connectivity across the state. Moreover, a network of airports has been set up to boost air connectivity. According to a Times Now report, Uttar Pradesh has become the state with the maximum number of cities with metro facilities.

Metro is operational in Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. Moreover, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corportation (UPMRC) is undertaking the development of Agra Metro and Meerut Metro with plans for Varanasi Metro, Prayagraj Metro, Gorakhpur Metro and Bareilly Metro. The operation of Meerut Metro and Delhi-Meerut RRTS is managed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).

 

Metro from Greater Noida West to Jewar Airport

The Noida Metro in Uttar Pradesh, which is operated by the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC), is among the largest metro operating network. It has been developed in two phases. The first phase is the Delta-1 to Sector 51 section, and the second phase includes the Sector 51 to Knowledge Park-5 section.

 

Ghaziabad Rapid Rail Metro to Jewar Airport

There are plans to link the Greater Noida Metro with the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar. According to reports, the NCRTC plans to run the Namo Bharat Train (Rapid Rail) to Jewar Airport, linking Greater Noida and Greater Noida West, which will be connected to the Delhi-Meerut RRTS. A 72.26-kilometre Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor will connect Ghaziabad’s RRTS and the upcoming Jewar Airport.

 

Agra Metro

The Agra Metro project will consist of two corridors that pass through the city centre, connecting major tourist spots such as the Taj Mahal, the Agra Fort and Sikandra. The Sikandra-Taj East Gate project, spanning 14.25 km, is being implemented and undertaken by the UPMRC at an estimated cost of Rs 8,379 crore.

 

Kanpur Metro

The Kanpur Metro first phase has started, while some development work remains in the second phase. Kanpur Metro became operational on December 28, 2021. Currently, construction is underway to run the metro in two phases. According to reports, the first phase comprises 23 stations, while the second phase has around eight stations.

 

Lucknow Metro

Lucknow Metro is the seventh operational metro network in India, covering 22.87 km with 22 stations. Earlier this year, the Uttar Pradesh government decided to expand the Lucknow Metro. There will be a new phase from Charbagh to Basant Kunj via Chowk. Moreover, the current phase will also be extended till IIM and PGI, as per reports.
