The Bangalore Metro network, also known as the Namma Metro, is a lifeline for the residents as it connects key localities and far-flung areas of the city. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is developing metro projects and working on the expansion of the metro network to boost connectivity. The upcoming Blue Line of Bangalore Metro, also known as the ORR-Airport Metro Line, is set to ease commuting to the major localities, such as KR Puram, Hebbal and Marathahalli, and the Kempegowda International Airport. The Blue Line of Bangalore Metro is expected to be completed around June 2026. The Namma Metro blue line, spanning a total length of 58.19-km, is being developed in two sections – Phase 2A from Central Silk Board to Krishnarajpura and Phase 2B from Krishnarajpura to Airport. The blue line is mostly elevated and at-grade near the Airport and includes two underground sections covering Jakkur Aerodrome and Yelahanka AFB.
The Namma Metro Blue line provides connectivity to different parts of the city via interchange lines with the Yellow Line at Central Silk Board, Purple Line at KR Pura, Pink Line at Nagawara and with the future /proposed Orange Line at Hebbal.
As per reports, 45% of the civil work on the Blue Line’s Phase 2A and 2B sections, from Central Silk Board to Krishnarajpura and Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has been completed. On the stretch from Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the airport, around 10% of track installation is complete.
BMRCL begins land acquisitions for Namma Metro Phase 3
According to media reports, the BMRCL has initiated the land acquisition process for the much-awaited Namma Metro Phase 3 project. The Phase 3 project of Bangalore Metro includes two corridors – a 32.15-km section from JP Nagar Phase 4 to Kempapura and 12.5-km section from Hosahalli to Kadabagere. The land acquisition will take place in phases.
BMRCL hikes metro fare by 50%
February 12, 2025: Recently, the BMRCL increased the Namma Metro fare by up to 50% based on the recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC). The new fare came into effect from February 9, 2025. After the price revision, the lowest metro fare remained at Rs 10 while the maximum fare was increased from Rs 60 to Rs 90. Further, the BMRCL has also increased the minimum balance required on smart cards from Rs 50 to Rs 90.

Namma Metro Blue Line: Construction details
The Blue Line Metro in Bangalore is a 58.19-kilometre section comprising 30 metro stations. It is being developed in two phases: Phase 2A and Phase 2B.
Under Phase 2 of the Bangalore Metro project, around 72 km of metro line will be developed at a cost of Rs 56,000 Crore. The Phase 2A project is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
Phase 2A
Under Phase 2A of Namma Metro, a line connecting Central Silk Board and KR Puram, comprising 13 stations, will be developed.
The project includes two packages. The first package comprises 2.84 km of ramps for a flyover at the Central Silk Board junction and 9.86 km of the viaduct with six elevated stations.
In the second package, an 8.38-km viaduct with seven elevated stations, a 1.1-km depot line and a 0.30-km pocket track are being developed.
Phase 2B
Under Phase 2B of Namma Metro, a section connecting KR Puram and the Kempegowda International Airport will be developed. It will comprise 17 metro stations. Construction company Afcons Infrastructure Limited has been awarded the project. It has launched all girders on the Bellandur Flyover. Devarabeesanahalli flyover is also being developed as part of this project.
Multi-modal integration
The Bangalore Metro Phase 3 will facilitate multi-modal integration at 10 places: JP Nagar 4th Phase, JP Nagar, Kamakhya Bus Depot, Mysuru Road, Sumanahalli, Peenya, BEL Circle, Hebbal, Kempapura and Hosahalli. The Lottegollahalli and Hebbal will be linked to the railway stations in the vicinity through foot overbridges. Phase 3 metro stations will comprise dedicated bus bays, pickup and drop-off bays, pedestrian paths, IPT/autorickshaw stands, and a sharing facility. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will offer feeder buses to the metro station.
Bangalore Metro Blue Line expansion
The BMRCL plans to extend the Namma Metro network to 220 kilometre over the next five years by introducing six metro routes on the Blue Line and Pink Line covering 143 km and 95 new metro stations. The Blue and Pink line of Namma Metro are under construction.
The union cabinet has approved Phase 3 of the Bangalore Metro project, adding two additional metro lines and 31 metro stations to the existing network. The total estimated cost for the project is Rs 15,611 crore. This project will be completed in 2029. Phase 3, also known as the Orange Line, will cover 44.65 km and connect southern and western Bengaluru with Kempegowda International Airport via Hebbal.

- Smart tokens: Commuters can acquire smart tokens of Rs 10, which can be utilised only for a single journey.
- Contactless Smart Cards: The smart cards are designed for multiple journeys. The minimum cost of the card is Rs 50. Commuters can get a discount on the metro fare from 15% to 23%, using smart cards.
- Varshik Cards: The Varshik Card is a rechargeable card that can store credit up to Rs 1,500. The minimum fare is Rs 8.50.
- Sanchar Cards: The Sanchar Card is a multi-trip card that can be used for up to 100 trips between fixed points. The minimum fare is Rs 7.65.
- Group tickets: Group tickets, or paper tickets, can be used for a group of ten members travelling between the same stations.
- Metro-Bus Ticket (MBT) Day Pass: The MBT Day Pass serves as an integrated ticket, allowing unlimited travel on metro and non-air-conditioned buses for a day for smart card holders. The fare on the Saral ticket is Rs 110 and includes travel on air-conditioned buses (except airport buses). The Saraag ticket which costs Rs 70, can be used exclusively for metro and non-air-conditioned buses. The MBT Day passes can be obtained from select bus stations and buses near Reach 1.
- Combo Cards: The SBI issues Combo Cards, which are SBI debit-cum-transit cards that offer a 15% to 21% discount compared to token rates. The combo cards are available at SBI branches. Commuters with bank accounts in these branches can get these cards.
- Multiple tickets in a card: The smart card provides the facility of holding Varshik (the default ticket type), Sanchar, and MBT tickets all in one.

Bangalore Metro Blue Line: Timing
Metro train services will operate from 5 AM to 11 PM, with a frequency of four to 20 minutes. On second and fourth Saturdays or on public holidays, the metro trains will run from 6 AM to 10:35 PM. On Sundays, train services will be operational from 7 AM to 11 PM.

The BMRCL has an official mobile application called the Namma Metro App, which enables commuters to access details related to the Namma Metro, including stations list, fare, route map, etc. and avail services like smart card recharge. Commuters can download the mobile application from the app stores on their smartphones. The app also has a Help section using which commuters can get in touch with the customer care team.
