June 7, 2023: This monsoon season, Mumbaikars will receive weather updates from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on their mobile phones through the SMS services.

A control room has been set up by the District Disaster Management Department (DDMD) to provide real-time weather alerts.

According to the statement released by BMC, the following was decided in the disaster management and monsoon preparedness plan chaired by BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal. The meeting was attended by officials from agencies, including the Mumbai Metro, BEST, NDRF, IMD, Mhada and MMRDA.

  • For uninterrupted operation of the Mumbai local trains used by more than 70 lakh people daily, BMC’s garden department was directed to trim the trees in the railway premises by May end.
  • De-watering pumps to be installed at 480 locations in Mumbai where waterlogging may occur during heavy rainfall. These pumps will also have CCTV camera surveillance.
  • No permission given for the digging of roads in Mumbai after May 15, except for emergencies.
  • The BMC has reserved 3,000 beds to accommodate patients with monsoon-related diseases. Each ward will have arrangements for five schools of rainfall to provide shelter to citizens in case of emergencies like heavy rainfall.
  • Occupants of dangerous buildings should be served notices to vacate, and alternative arrangements for their accommodation should be made. Following suit, the BMC has released a list of unsafe buildings that can be checked on the MCGM website. The Mhada has served notice to 15 cess buildings in South Mumbai that have around 545 residents to vacate the buildings. Similar steps have been taken in Mumbai’s satellite city – Navi Mumbai, where the NMMC has served notice to 524 buildings falling under the C category. The list of buildings can be seen on the NMMC website. As per the orders of the High Court, the water supply of such dangerous buildings should be discontinued.
  • As part of the monsoon preparedness, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has formed three teams for monsoon-related emergencies in Mumbai. An extra team will be stationed in the eastern suburbs. The release pointed out that the Indian Navy has also informed that their teams and divers are ready for emergency response.
