Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has completed around 75% of the underground tunnelling work for the Namma Metro’s Pink Line connecting Nagawara to Kalena Agrahara. According to BMRCL, 15.2 km of the 21.2 km tunnelling work has been completed. As the underground station works are progressing well, the agency has decided to commission the entire Pink Line by the end of March 2025.
Tunnel Boring Machine (TMB) Lavi achieved a breakthrough at RMS (Vellara) station on February 15, 2023. Tunnelling started at Shivajinagar on March 26, 2021 and a breakthrough was achieved at MG Road station after completing 1074 km of tunnelling on April 15, 2022. It further started from MG Road on May 26, 2022, and completed the drive up to RMS (Vellara) station on February 15, 2023, covering a tunnel length of 1134 km, as per an official BMRCL release.
Developed as a part of the Namma Metro phase 2 project, the Pink Line includes an underground section of 13.9 km, requiring 21.2 km of tunnelling (twin).
The underground section is divided into four contract packages and nine TBMs are deployed for completing the works. Of these, three TBMs – Urja, Varada, and Avni, have already completed their designated length of tunnelling. TBM Lavi is the fourth TBM to complete its drive. TBM Vindhya is driving from Pottery station to Shadhimahal shaft and it is expected to complete its drive and breakthrough by the end of February 2023. All four TBMs have been deployed by L&T and have completed their work. The tunnelling work of two packages will be completed, as per BMRCL.
