To cater to the increase in passengers commuting by Metro, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) introduced its first set of two eight-coach metro trains on November 8, 2022. The new metro trains will first operate on the Red Line or line 1 from Rithala to Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda and gradually open in other routes of the Delhi metro network.
The conversion of six-coach trains to eight-coach trains on the Delhi Metro Red Line will be carried out in a graded manner so that there is no impact on the usual passenger services, and it is likely to be completed by 2024.
Delhi metro’s Red line is the oldest and one of the busiest metro routes. The first metro train was opened between Shahdara and Tis Hazari on December 25, 2002. There are four existing interchanges – Welcome, Kashmere Gate, Inderlok and Netaji Subhash Place on the route. According to the DMRC, currently, the estimated number of passengers travelling on this route daily is 4.7 lakh. The first six-coach train service on Delhi Metro was also introduced on the Red Line route in 2013.
In 2021, the conversion of all six-coach trains into eight-coach trains on the Yellow Line (Line 2) from Samaypur Badli to HUDA City Centre and Blue Line (Line-3/4) from Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida Electronic City/Vaishali, was successfully done by adding more coaches to the remaining fleet of six-coach trains.
Currently, the Delhi Metro system has a fleet of 336 train sets with 176 six-coach trains, 138 eight-coach trains and 22 four-coach trains across all the corridors, except the Rapid Metro Gurugram and the Noida Metro routes.
