Expressways and road projects in Haryana that will improve connectivity

February 2, 2024: The road network in Haryana is expanding rapidly, with the construction of some key expressway projects in progress. With new flyovers, bypasses and expressway projects, the state aims to decongest all its major cities and ensure easy connectivity for commuters. As cited in media reports, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar recently said that the state has developed a road network of 40,000 kilometre (km) of existing roads over the past 9.5 years. This includes the improvement of 33,000 km of existing roads and the construction of 7000 km of new roads. At present, all 22 districts of the state are connected to the National Highway (NH) network of roads, he said.

An Indian Express report cited an official stating that the union ministry of road transport and highways is aiming to complete around 100 projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore in Haryana by December 2024. Of these, 51 projects of 2200 km worth Rs 47,000 crore have been completed and 30 projects of 830 km worth Rs 35,000 crore are underway. Another 19 projects of 756 km amounting to Rs 20,000 crore are in the pipeline, the official said.

Here are some of the significant infrastructure projects in the state which are set to boost connectivity and reduce commuting time.

Greenfield expressway to Delhi-Mumbai expressway

The Trans-Haryana expressway will be connected to the Delhi-Mumbai expressway through an 86-km greenfield expressway. This project, developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will ease traffic movement between north and west India, reducing congestion in Delhi-NCR. The greenfield expressway will be developed from Paniyala to Alwar in Rajasthan at a cost of Rs 1,400 crore, according to a TOI report.

Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway

The Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway is a 670-km greenfield and brownfield expressway route covering Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. Around six districts in Haryana will benefit from this upcoming expressway that will be developed under the Centre’s Bharatmala Pariyojana. The expressway will reduce travel time from Delhi to Katra from 12-13 hours to six hours and from Delhi to Amritsar from 7-8 hours to 4 hours.

Eastern and Western Peripheral expressway

Along with the Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE), the 135-km Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), also known as the Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal Expressway, completes the largest ring road corridor around Delhi. The Kundli Manesar Palwal Expressway or KMP Expressway, also known as the Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE), is a 135.6-km-long, six-lane operational expressway. The expressways became operational in 2018.

Flyover and road projects in Haryana

In June 2023, union minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated 11 flyover projects on the 24-km eight-lane section of the National Highway from Delhi to Panipat. Some upcoming road projects include:

A 34-km outer ring road in Karnal worth Rs 1,700 crore
A 23-km Ambala green field six-lane ring road at Jandli village

A total of 37 national highways of 3,391-km will also be developed in the state.
