The Kolkata Metro Yellow Line comprises 10 stations with two interchange stations.

Kolkata is the first Indian city where the metro rail urban mass rapid transit system was introduced, and operations commenced in 1984. The Kolkata Metro network is witnessing rapid expansion, providing easy access to different parts of the city. The Kolkata Metro Line-4, also known as the Yellow Line, is an under-construction metro section that will connect Noapara to Barasat, spanning 16.8 km. The route will mostly run underground and comprise an interchange facility with Kolkata Metro Line-6 at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport. Construction work on the Kolkata Metro Line-4 is in progress and expected to be operational soon.

 

Kolkata Metro Yellow Line: Construction details

The Kolkata Metro Yellow Line project is being developed under three phases:

  • Phase-1: A metro line connecting Noapara and Biman Bandar will be developed in this phase.
  • Phase-2: Under the second phase of the metro project, a line from Biman Bandar to New Barrackpore will be built.
  • Phase-3: The third phase will include the construction of a line from New Barrackpore to Barasat.

The Noapara Metro Station will provide an interchange facility to the Kolkata Metro Line-2 (Blue Line), ensuring connectivity to the southern peripheries of the city. Further, the Biman Bandar station at the NSCBI Airport will serve as an interchange station for the Kolkata Metro Line-6 (Orange Line), making travel to the airport faster and more convenient.

Kolkata Metro Yellow Line: Timing and frequency

Metro services on the Kolkata Metro Yellow Line will be available on all days of the week from 7 AM to 11 PM. Metro trains will operate at a frequency of 5-7 minutes during peak hours and 10-15 minutes during non-peak hours.

 

Kolkata Metro Yellow Line: Fare

The metro fare for the Yellow Line will depend on the distance travelled. The metro fare will be a minimum of Rs 10 and a maximum of Rs 25.

Commuters can avail of tokens, which are single-journey tickets, available at vending machines at all metro stations. They can also use smart cards and recharge them at vending machines or customer care counters at any station.

 

Kolkata Metro Yellow Line: Real estate impact

The Kolkata Metro Yellow Line is a major infrastructure project in the city that will have a significant impact on the city’s transportation system and the real estate market. It will ease connectivity to key localities in the southern parts of the city, the city centre, and the airport. The Yellow Line is expected to reduce travel time from Noapara to NSCBI Airport to around 30 minutes from around 1 hour and 30 minutes by road.

Further, the upcoming project will result in increased economic activities along the corridor, generating increased demand for investment options, including commercial properties. Moreover, the localities along the route are expected to see a rise in demand for residential properties owing to good connectivity. Thus, prices are also expected to rise in future.
