The four-lane elevated road Maa Flyover in Kolkata was built to cut traffic on the Sarat Bose Road. The crucial road connects the city’s southern and eastern regions. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 240 crore,  the Maa flypast is 7.5-km long and rises 15 metre over the surrounding terrain. It took nearly five years to build the project. It was finally made public in 2015.

By road: Numerous buses have stops close to the Maa Flyover.

By rail: The Sealdah Railway Station is the closest to the Maa Flyover. 

By metro: The Central Metro Station is the closest to the flyover.

  • The Sarat Bose Road used to be heavily congested before the flyover. The flyover has shortened commuters’ times between south and east Kolkata. 
  • Another advantage of the flyover is that it has lessened ground-level traffic congestion, improved pedestrian safety and decreased vehicle-related pollution. 
  • The overpass ensures that traffic moves along without interruption, lowering the possibility of accidents.
  • The local business has benefited from the flypast as well. By enhancing communication between the south and east of Kolkata, the flyover has made it simpler for individuals to get to and from work. As a result, additional firms have sprung up in the area, increasing economic activity and the number of job openings.

 

Controversy

The flyover’s construction on a public playground drew harsh criticism from social and environmental organisations. Over 500 trees were also felled during construction, which sparked protests from locals and environmentalists.
