Mysore Airport: Infrastructure, connectivity and expansion plans

Mysore Airport currently has flights to Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai.

Mysore Airport, also known as Mandakalli Airport, is a domestic airport located in Mysore, Karnataka. The airport has helped improve the city’s air connectivity, making it easier for travellers to access other significant Indian cities. Its proximity to the city centre makes it conveniently accessible to both locals and visitors. With expansion plans in the pipeline, the airport is set to become an international airport soon. Operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Mysore Airport plays a crucial role in connecting Mysore to major cities in India. It currently has flights to Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai.

The airport, spread over 290 acres of land, is located approximately 10 kilometres away from the city centre in Mandakalli locality. Originally built in the 1940s by the Kingdom of Mysore, the airport was later taken over by the Karnataka government and then the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 1950. Over time, the airport has evolved to serve different purposes. It was initially used for passenger flights to Bangalore using Dakota aircraft and later for special flights carrying important people and training the Indian Air Force.

In 1985, regional airline Vayudoot began flights from Bangalore, but they were discontinued in 1990 due to low passenger numbers. In 2010, a new terminal was constructed, which could handle 200 passengers. Currently, the airport has flights to seven destinations, making it an essential spot for travellers.

Mysore Airport: Infrastructure

Mysore Airport boasts a single runway, identified as 09/27, measuring 1,740 by 30 metres. This runway can handle aircraft like the ATR 72 turboprop and others of similar size. The airport’s apron area includes three parking stands for aircraft and is connected to the runway through a single perpendicular taxiway. The passenger terminal at the airport occupies a space of 3,250 square metres (about 35,000 square feet) and can accommodate up to 200 passengers at a time.

This modern facility offers essential amenities and a comfortable atmosphere to travellers. Furthermore, Volvo buses are available from Mysuru City Bus Stand, with seven daily departures tailored to flight schedules, ensuring convenient transportation to and from the airport for passengers.

Mysore Airport’s future expansion plans

This airport is set to become an international airport with plans for expansion underway. The runway will be extended to accommodate larger aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, but extension towards the west is not possible due to a railway line. If authorities decide to extend it eastward, the National Highway 766 will have to be rerouted.

Initially, the state administration delayed upgrading the highway until more planes arrived at the airport, but they later proposed placing the roadway underneath the runway to use less land. However, the federal government rejected this plan due to safety concerns. The runway will now be extended to 2750 metres as the national government approved the plan in May 2018. There are several programs and budget allocations in place for this expansion. Stay tuned for exciting improvements at Mysore airport.
