NH44: Route details of Srinagar-Kanyakumari highway

The NH44 is the longest national highway in India and is from Jammu and Kashmir to Tamil Nadu.

The National Highway-44 (NH44) is the longest national highway in India. It starts from Srinagar  and goes all the way to Kanyakumari. Constructed under the National Highways Development Project (NHDC), it covers the North-South corridor of NHDP. This national highway is managed and maintained by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

NH44: Length of the longest highway in India

The NH44 running from the north to the southern corridor of India is 3,745 km. While the NH44 was not the longest route from the beginning, it came into existence after seven different national highways were put together.

 

NH44 route: Cities and states passing through this highway

The national highways that constitute NH44 include NH1A, which is in Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir; NH1 began from the states of Punjab and Haryana and ended at Delhi. The next parts included are the NH2, which started at Delhi and ended in the city of Agra, followed by NH3, which started from the latter and ended at Gwalior. 

The NH3 was formerly known as the Agra Bombay highway before it was included in the NH44. Other highways included NH75 and NH26, which ended at Jhansi, and lastly, the NH7, which ran through Nagpur, Adilabad, Nirmal, Hyderabad, Kamareddy, Kurnool, and Mehboob Nagar, Anantapur, Bangalore, Karur, Salem, Dharmapuri, Madurai, Kovilpatti and Tirunelveli finally ending at Kanyakumari.

Another important addition to NH 44was the Chenani Nashri Tunnel, which Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, inaugurated on  April 2, 2017.

The number of states that the highway connects to is 11. They are Jammu and Kashmir (304 km), Himachal Pradesh (11 km), Punjab (279 km), Haryana(257 km), Uttar Pradesh(287 km), Madhya Pradesh(547 km), Maharashtra( 260 km), Telangana (533 km), Andhra Pradesh (260 km), Karnataka (135 km) and Tamil Nadu (630 km).

NH44: Major attractions to visit along the road

Following are some of the must-visit places located along NH44.

  • Kashmir

Referred to as the heaven on earth, Kashmir consists of beautiful mountains covered in snow, meadows. Kashmir also has authentic dishes that will satiate your food cravings including rogan josh and the delicious yakhni pulao.

  • Ludhiana and Jalandhar

The green revolution of India is renowned for having taken place in the state of Punjab, which is the next stop on NH44. Other than the beautiful farms and forests, you can then enjoy traditional customs and festivals that take place in this state amongst a variety of colours and explicit traditions, along with enjoying authentic Punjabi food, including the famous parathas with Sarson ka Saag.

  • Agra

  • Kurukshetra

Situated in Haryana, Kurukshetra falls on the route of the NH44. You can also visit the Shri Krishna Museum and the Brahma Sarovar. 

  • Mathura

  • Nagpur

Situated in the Deccan region of the country, Nagpur is along the NH44.

  • Madurai

Madurai is known for its skyline and an addition of 14 Gopurams. One of the most prominent locations to visit in this city is the Meenakshi Temple.

  • Kanyakumari

As mentioned earlier, NH44 ends at the city of Kanyakumari, where you can visit three beautiful water bodies along the coast of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian sea and the Indian ocean.

The NH44 passess through 11 states, which includes Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. On the way, travellers will come across many historical sites:

Kurukshetra: Visit the famous Shri Krishna Museum located in Kurukshetra, Haryana. Brahma Sarovar, a holy water body, is also located in the same city.

Agra: The Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, Akbar’s tomb at Sikandra, and Jahangir Mahal are some of the historical places to explore in the city.

NH44: Speed limit 

Given the notifications issued by the ministry, one must follow the rules and regulations on the national highway to ensure vehicle safety and smooth running. These rules include the following:

Speed limit on NH44 for cars

Vehicles running on NH44 are required to strictly have a limit of 100 kmph, while for the expressway, it can be increased to 120 kmph.

Speed limit on NH44 for two-wheelers

Since heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks run on this Highway along with cars, there is a specific speed limit that should be maintained by smaller two-wheelers which is 80 kmph for both expressways and highways. For heavy-duty vehicles, on the other hand, such as trucks, the speed limit is 100 kmph.

When driving along the NH44, commuters must adhere to the traffic rules and regulations. The maximum speed limit is 100 kmph for four-wheeler vehicle and 120 kmph for four-wheeler vehicle.
