The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has brought to light that the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro), operational since March 2023, has not made any property tax payments for its metro stations and other properties in the city. The civic body has communicated with the metro authority, notifying them of the outstanding dues. In response, Maha-metro has suggested that PMC seek guidance from the Union government before enforcing taxes, given that Maha-Metro is a government entity.
Reportedly, the PMC property tax department has decided to levy taxes on 18 metro stations, two depots, and other properties owned by Maha Metro Rail Corporation. The civic body expects to collect approximately Rs 20 crore in taxes annually from the Metro authorities. PMC officials will calculate taxes based on the annual rateable value of the properties.
According to media sources, a senior PMC official mentioned that, following consultation with the state’s urban development department, they were advised that PMC has the legal authority to impose property taxes. To facilitate the collection of property tax, they have sent a letter to Maha Metro, requesting information about the properties, occupancy certificates, and other relevant documentation. For Maha Metro’s office and commercial operations, PMC is entitled to impose property taxes.
