December 20, 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) plans to auction 50 out of the 200 commercial properties seized for non-payment of property tax. The taxation and tax collection department initiated the assessment process for these properties, with completion expected by the end of the following week. This move is part of the PMC’s efforts to recover outstanding property tax dues, which constitute a significant portion of municipal revenue.
The taxation and tax collection department has set a target to generate Rs 2,000 crore in property tax during the current financial year. To achieve this goal, the PMC has implemented various measures prioritizing dues recovery. The department has been actively issuing notices, imposing fines and sealing properties of tax defaulters with substantial arrears.
As part of this crackdown, 14,000 properties have already been sealed, with an additional 30,000 commercial property tax cases pending. The sealed properties will be put up for auction to enhance revenue streams. In total, 200 properties have been confiscated, and the first phase will involve the auction of 50 commercial properties.
The administration has initiated the assessment of confiscated properties, involving the appointment of a government assessment officer. The property assessment process is scheduled for completion by the end of December, preparing the way for the auction of commercial assets in the new year. To facilitate the auction process, the taxation and tax collection department will receive additional manpower, and lawyers will be hired on a contractual basis to address outstanding judicial cases.
