May 19, 2023: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the ‘Riverine-based tourism Circuit’ being developed over the river Brahmaputra will be signed among the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the Sagarmala Development Company Limited (SDCL), the Assam Tourism Development Corporation Limited (ATDC) and the Directorate of Inland Water Transport (DIWT) Assam in Guwahati on May 19, 2023, for connecting seven religious sites in Guwahati.
The project is being developed under the Sagarmala Programme at an initial cost of Rs 40-45 crore. The SDCL and the IWAI will jointly contribute 55% of the total cost while the remaining will be contributed by the ATDC. The DIWT will provide the usage of ghats near the temples free of cost for the upcoming project.
The Sagarmala project will link the seven historic temples in Guwahati – Kamakhya, Pandunath, Ashwaklanta, Doul Govinda, Umananda, Chakreshwar and Auniati Satra. The circuit will sail from Hanuman Ghat, Uzan Bazar and complete its journey by covering these temples through waterways. The ferry service aims to cut travel time to less than two hours for covering one complete circuit.
The Sagarmala project is a flagship programme by the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways, which will focus on the integrated development of all maritime-related activities, by harnessing the country’s coastline and navigable waterways and boosting the performance of the logistics sector. A total of 574 projects have been identified under the four components of the Sagarmala scheme, for implementation during 2015-2035, with a total budget of around Rs six lakh crore.
