The PM shared this data while addressing a public rally in Gandhinagar today where he laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation, projects worth around Rs 4,400 crore.

May 12, 2023: Since 2014, about 4 crore houses were handed over to poor families under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Of these, 70% of units were registered in the name of the women, prime minister Narendra Modi said today. The PM shared this data while addressing a public rally in Gandhinagar today where he laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation, projects worth around Rs 4,400 crore.

Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of the PMAY (rural and urban) projects, and participated in griha pravesh of around 19,000 houses built under the scheme. He handed over keys to beneficiaries of the scheme during the programme.

Under the PMAY, Modi said, the beneficiaries had a say in the construction of houses where the government transfers the financial aid directly into their bank accounts. He said that the houses built under the Central scheme were a package of many schemes. These houses had a toilet under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, electricity connection under the Saubhagya scheme, free LPG connection under the Ujjwala scheme, piped wanted under the JJM, he said.

Noting that the cost of construction of houses under the scheme is several lakhs, Modi said that crores of women beneficiaries have now become millionaires. These crores of women have owned any property for the first time. He congratulated the “Lakhpati Didis”.

The PM said that the government was working keeping in mind the challenges of the future and the growing urbanisation in the country. He said that more than a thousand houses in Rajkot were being constructed using modern technology, using less time and money. He informed that this experiment under the light house project was carried out in six cities of the country where technology has helped in building cheaper and modern houses.  The PM also noted that 20 cities in the country had an operational metro network, adding that the network grew 600 km in the past nine years from 250 km before 2014.

The PM also elaborated on the steps to remove the bad practices and cheating in the real estate sector that had caused a lot of hardships for poor and middle-class families. The RERA Act has provided legal security to middle-class families for getting the promised facilities when purchasing a house.
