This is expected to boost metro connectivity to northern and southern parts of the city. When will the Bangalore Metro Yellow Line open?
The BMRCL is working on a solution to compensate for the Namma Metro Yellow line’s delayed launch. The metro line was earlier scheduled to start in December 2021. One solution is to start metro services with the available coaches but with trains stopping only at select stations. This is expected to provide some relief to commuters.
As per media reports, the BMRCL is planning to open the Namma Metro Yellow Line by April with four trains at a frequency of 30 minutes. The frequency is expected to increase once more trains are added each month. On January 6, 2025, rolling stock manufacturer Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) rolled out the first indigenous driverless train for the 19-km Yellow Metro line in Bangalore. More train sets will be available by April. The first stainless steel, automated driverless trainset was manufactured at the company’s Metro Manufacturing Facility in Uttarpara, West Bengal.
According to the BMRCL, the trainset was scheduled to reach Bangalore’s Hebbagodi depot by January 15, 2025. Bangalore has received its first India-assembled driverless metro train for Namma Metro Yellow Line. The six-coach trainset manufactured by TRSL was dispatched from Uttarpara, West Bengal. According to BMRCL, these multiple train sets are scheduled to start in the first week of March.
The third train sets will be available by April 2025. The company Titagarh said it will ramp up production and deliver two trains a month by September 2025, as cited in reports. The testing and trails will take at least 20 days to a month, which is expected to extend the Bangalore Metro’s Yellow Line start date.
Namma Metro Yellow Line: Cause of delay
Residents of Bangalore have been waiting for the inauguration of the Namma Metro Yellow Line as significantly boost traffic in prominent localities such as Electronic City, Bommasandra, HSR Layout, etc. Initially, the project’s launch in 2022 was delayed due to land acquisition challenges and the pandemic. As per reports, the delivery of train coaches has been delayed as the company that was awarded the contract for the supply of coaches faced operational challenges. The China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) was awarded a Rs 1,578-crore contract in 2019 to deliver 216 metro coaches to BMRCL. However, they could not fulfil the contract as the manufacturing plant in India was not set up as required. This has significantly delayed the project, pushing its inauguration date to end of 2024.
