Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road to be ready by March 2024

This expressway is being developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojna.

August 28, 2023: The Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), also known as Peripheral Ring Road, is a 280-km expressway in Karnataka that will connect 12 satellite towns. As recently cited in media reports, union transport minister Nitin Gadkari has said that the Satellite Town Ring Road Project will be ready by 2024.

Aimed at decongesting the city, the ring road will connect the towns of Dobbasapete, Devanahalli, Doddaballapura, Sulibele, Hoskote, Sarjapura, Attibele, Tattekere, Anekal, Kanakapura, Ramanagara and Magadi. Developed at a cost of Rs 15,000 crore, the project will connect eight state and six national highways, reducing traffic snarls in several areas of the city. A Timesnownews report mentioned Gadkari as saying that the ring road would provide an alternate route for trucks that will not need to visit Bangalore when travelling to other areas.

According to another Timesnownews report, the State Board of Wildlife (SBWL) has approved the realigned stretch of the STRR Project. The decision was made during a meeting with chief minister Siddaramaiah, who is the chairman of the board. Earlier the board had directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to revise the alignment to reduce potential disturbances to wildlife.

The NHAI submitted a proposal for a 6.63-kilometre (km) elevated corridor, covering existing village road, with a minimum clearance of seven metre from the ground level. Officials also assured the implementation of visual and sound barriers along the route, the media report said.

Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road Project details

This expressway is being developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojna Lot-3 and will serve as a bypass around Bangalore. It is being developed in three parallel phases and involves construction of National Highway-948A (NH948A) and realignment of existing National Highway-648 (NH648) (old NH207). The STRR is a four-to-six lane expressway that will connect 331 connected villages and 12 cities.

The Satellite Town Ring Road Project will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). Around 85% of the expressway, which is 243 km, will cover Karnataka while the remaining 45 km will run in Tamil Nadu.

Around 60% of the project’s cost will be borne by the NHAI, the remaining 40% will be borne by the Karnataka Government.
