April 10, 2024: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday announced that starting May 1, all shops and establishments that don’t have signboards set up in Marathi will have to pay double the property tax.
This action is being taken under Supreme Court’s Rule 35 and Section 36 C of Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Rules, 2018 and Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) (Amendment) Act 2022.
The municipal body in a release also mentioned that effective immediately, it will cancel the license of shops with illuminated boards that have not yet changed to the Devnagri script. Renewal costs of these licenses will be in the range of Rs 25,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh, the authority said, which the shop owners will have to bear.
According to the BMC release the Supreme Court had granted two months that ended November 23, 2023 for shops and commercial establishments to display sign boards in Marathi language. The BMC started its compliance drive from November 28, 2023.
As per findings of the BMC, 87,047 shops and establishments were checked between November 28, 2023, and March 31, 2024 of which 84,007 or 96.5 % had put Marathi signboards. The BMC has sent notices to 3,040 shops and establishments for non-compliance of this order. As per the release, while some cases for which notices have been issued are being heard in court, others appear for hearing before the deputy commissioner (special) for administrative method of settling the case under the provision in the Act.
