March 11, 2024: Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde partially inaugurated the Phase-1 of the Mumbai Coastal Road project today in the presence of deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The CM called the new road project an ‘engineering marvel’. After the inauguration, Shinde showed green flags to the BEST electric buses and a vintage car rally.
The South-bound corridor of the Mumbai Coastal Road from Worli to Marine Drive covering 9.58 km was inaugurated today. The remaining part of the total 10.58 km of Phase-1 is the 1 km stretch that is the road joining Worli to Bandra Worli Sea Link, which is under-construction.
The coastal road will be open for public use from March 12, 2024. As the Mumbai Coastal Road Project is still under construction, it will be open to public from 8 AM to 8 PM, Monday to Friday.
Currently the opened stretch has three entry points at
- Bindu Madhav Thackeray Junction
- Rajani Patel Junction
- Amarsons Garden
and two exit points at
- Amarsons Garden
- Marine Drive (Princess Street Bridge)
Mumbai Coastal Road: Maximum speed
According to Mumbai Police, the maximum speed on the Mumbai Coastal Road phase- 1 is 80 km/hr. The maximum speed inside the tunnel is 60 km/hr and the speed at entry and exit points will be 40 km/hr.
Mumbai Coastal Road: Vehicles allowed
Only cars and buses are allowed to take the Mumbai Coastal Road. Bikes, scooters, or any two-wheeler, three-wheeler and heavy vehicles are not allowed on the Mumbai Coastal Project that has been inaugurated today. Also, pedestrians cannot enter the coastal road. Vehicles stopping on the Mumbai Coastal Road to click pictures will be penalised.
The work on the Mumbai Coastal Road started on October 13, 2018 with an estimated cost of Rs 12,721 crore.
