Amid rising pressure on existing infrastructure in India’s national capital Delhi, which forced authorities to find alternatives in the national capital region (NCR), the city of Noida came into existence on April 17, 1976, under the UP Industrial Area Development Act, 1976. The Noida Authority was created, to execute a planned development of a city that was once a land mass consisting of 36 villages of UP’s Bulandshahar district.
The name Noida is actually short for both, the city (New Okhla Industrial Development Area) and the authority that governs it (New Okhla Industrial Development Authority).
The official website of the Noida Authority lists various objectives for the development body. Among these, an important one is its responsibility to acquire land in the notified areas through the UP government under Land Acquisition Act, 1894.
Other objectives of the Noida Authority include:
- Preparing master plans for development of the area.
- Demarcating and developing sites for various land use.
- Allotting plots/properties as per regulations.
- Regulating building constructions.
- Setting up industries and providing infrastructure and amenities.
