March 6, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today unveiled and laid the foundation stone of multiple connectivity projects totalling Rs 15,400 crore in Kolkata, West Bengal. He inaugurated several significant metro and rapid transit projects across the nation, marking a notable step towards improving urban mobility and connectivity.
One of the highlights was the inauguration of India’s first under-river Metro tunnel in Kolkata. This extension of the Kolkata metro, which includes the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Metro section, boasts the country’s first transportation tunnel passing beneath a major river, signifying a crucial achievement in infrastructure development.
In addition to the underwater metro, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro section and the Taratal-Majerhat Metro section, part of the Joka-Esplanade line. The latter features the Majerhat Metro Station, an impressive elevated station spanning railway lines, platforms and a canal.
The inauguration event extended beyond Kolkata as PM Modi flagged off several other vital projects across the nation. These include the Pune Metro stretch from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi, the Kochi Metro Rail Phase 1 Extension from SN junction Metro Station to Tripunithura Metro Station, the Agra Metro stretch from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar, and the Duhai-Modinagar North section of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor.
Later in the day, PM Modi laid the foundation stone, dedicated, and inaugurated various infrastructure-related projects related to rail, road, transport, and petroleum and natural gas, valued at around Rs 12,800 crore in Bettiah, West Champaran district, Bihar. PM Modi’s three-day visit to states including Tamil Nadu, Odisha, West Bengal and Bihar from March 4-6 encompassed these significant developments.
