The Bhanawat family’s home in Udaipur was built in 1965, and several generations of the family have been living here since the last 60 years.
While some parts of the external architecture of the house have modern elements, the interiors haven’t changed much over the decades. In a city renowned for ornate and heavily designed homes, the Bhanawat family’s abode is refreshingly minimalistic and simple. With a typical verandah structure and an open airy kitchen, the lady of the house claims it to be her favourite place.
In 1973, one of the older generations of the Bhanawat family had to vacate the house for a few days following the flooding of the Ayad River that flows near the house. The lower portion of the house was submerged under water.
Mrs. Bhanawat still manages her kitchen the old-fashioned way, with aluminium utensils and earthen pots as water purifiers. Mr. Bhanawat, the owner of the house, is a music and book lover, and has books stacked all around the house.
Now Mr. Bhanawat lives here with his wife and two daughters, and has no plans of changing or modernising his inherited house in any way.
Amidst the rapid development of the city around it, this house has stood the test of time and retains most of its old-world charm indoors.
Being a book lover, Mr. Bhanawat’s home has books stacked all around the place.
