The Karnataka government plans to introduce four new Metro corridors by 2032 to provide better connectivity to Bangalore residents. This is apart from the three approved Metro corridors, under Phase 3 of the Bangalore Metro Rail project.
The action plan prepared by the Karnataka department of planning, program monitoring and statistics and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FICCI) proposed construction of four new metro lines by 2032 to provide Metro access to every citizen within 1-2 km from their workplaces or home.
The proposed two new Metro routes and two extensions under Phase 3 of the Namma Metro project will be developed at the cost of Rs 27,000 crore. As per the proposal, the new metro lines to be built include:
- Old Airport Road, from MG Road to Hope Farm via Marathahalli and Whitefield/ IT corridor (underground), covering 16 km, with an estimated cost of Rs 9,600 crore
- Nagawara to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) via Thanisandra/ Bharatiya City, covering 25 km, with an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore
The Metro extension lines include a 6-km section from Whitefield to Katamanallur / Hoskote, at an estimated cost of Rs 2,400 crore, and a 12-km extension of Bannerghatta line to Jigani at an estimated cost of Rs 4,800 crore.
Currently, Bangalore Metro has a 56-km operational network. Work on the Metro rail project linking Central Silk Board Junction to Kempegowda International Airport of 58.19 km with 30 stations is in progress. The government has planned to operationalise a 40.15-km Metro route in 2023.
