The Rs 17,000 crore Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway project would be ready for opertaions by March 2024, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said. The 285.3-km four-lane Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway project will save travel time for citizens and avoid delays in travelling through major towns and congested areas, Gadkari added. The Bharatmala project that covers 71.7 km in Karnataka will cost Rs 5,069 crore. The road project is also expected to cut down logistics costs. Construction work on 231 km of the project is already underway.
A 52 km alignment on the Bengaluru-Mysuru section will also be developed under Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway project project, whose cost is Rs 9,000 crore.
The Bengaluru-Mysuru highway project will be operational by February 2023, and work remaining to be completed along the stretch. It is a ten-lane road project with four lanes – two lanes on either side – that has been proposed for the villages and towns linked to the highway, while six lanes will lead directly to Mysuru from Bengaluru. The project is divided into two parts – one from Bengaluru to Nidaghatta and another from Nidaghatta to Mysuru. Once completed, the travel time from Bengaluru to Mysuru will be reduced to just 70 minutes.
The Karnataka government will develop cities and regions along this route as an industrial cluster to decongest Bengaluru. The highway will improve connectivity and provide access to Kodagu in Karnataka, Ooty in Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
Gadkari said that the government is also working on the Bengaluru Satellite Ring Road developed at an estimated cost of Rs 17,000 crore under the Bharatmala project, which aims to decongest the city. The project has a total length of 288 km, which includes 243 km in Karnataka and 45 km in Tamil Nadu.
