With an intention to provide alternate connectivity to Mumbaikars, the plan to construct the Mumbai Metro took shape in 2006, when the foundation stone for phase-1 according to Mumbai Metro map was laid. However, operational and policy delays resulted in delays to the Mumbai Metro lines in Mumbai project. Today, there are three Mumbai Metro lines and one Navi Mumbai Metro Line that have been commissioned.

The Mumbai Metro Line 1 was developed by the Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), a joint venture between Reliance Infrastructure ( which holds 74%) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA that holds 26%). Reliance Infrastructure is in the process of handing over its share of the company to the MMRDA for Rs 4,000 crore. With this transaction, MMRDA will be the sole holder of the Mumbai Metro One.
Also known as the Blue Line on the Mumbai Metro Map, this is an operational line connecting Versova with Ghatkopar Metro Station via Andheri Metro Station. This 11.4 km long metro route Mumbai is fully elevated.
MMRDA has also announced that Mumbai Metro Line 1’s speed will be now 80km/hr as opposed to the earlier 65 km/hr. Additionally, the number of trips on Metro Line 1 has also increased with 18 additional trips every day.

Also known as the Yellow Line, this is a 42-km-long Mumbai Metro line on the network and has two sub-sections -Mumbai Metro line 2A and Mumbai Metro line 2B.

The Mumbai Metro line 2A section is an 18-km corridor between Dahisar-Charkop-DN Nagar with 17 Mumbai metro stations. The MMRDA Metro has renamed 15 of the 17 stations owing to citizen demands of the metro station being location specific. According to a MMRDA notification, three station names have been changed. Pahadi Eksar Metro station has been changed to Shimpoli, Valnai metro station is Valnai-Meeth Chowky and Pahadi Goregaon is Bangur Nagar.
Mumbai Metro 2B will link DN Nagar Metro Station to Mandale and will be 22.6 km long. The estimated cost for this project is around Rs 11,000 crore. Mumbai Metro 2B is divided into 2 phases- Mandale to Chembur and Chembur to DN Nagar Metro Station. MMRDA has plans to start operations between Mandale and Chembur in 2024. This 5 km stretch will have 5 stations namely Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk and Diamond garden. Also, a car shed is being constructed on 31 acre land at Mandale which will accommodate 72 metro trains at a time.
Maharashtra’s urban development department in September 2023 issued an order extending the Metro 2B from Mandale to Cheetah Camp. With this the metro will be extended by 1.02 km at an additional cost of Rs 205 crore.

Also known as the Aqua Line, Mumbai Metro Line 3 is 33.5 km long completely underground and covers the distance between Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai and SEEPZ and Aarey in north Mumbai. It will have with 26 underground Mumbai metro stations and one at-grade station This Mumbai metro route will also pass through the Mumbai Airport which will further boost the connectivity in the region.
Constructed in phases, phase-1 of the Mumbai Metro 3 is expected to be open by April 2024. Trials run of phase-1 that spans 12 km started on March 12, 2024. This stretch is from Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). This line will help people traveling to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The phase-2 of the Aqua Line will open by October 2024.
Aqua Line will integrate at eight public transport locations thus enhancing connectivity. These are Mumbai CSMT and Churchgate termini, Grant Road and Mumbai Central railway stations, Dadar MSRTC bus depot, Mahalakshmi monorail and Mumbai Metro Lines 1 and 2B.
The total cost of construction of this route was previously pegged at Rs 23,136 crore. Citing cost escalation, the Maharashtra cabinet on August 10, 2022 approved an additional expenditure of Rs 10,269 crore for the Mumbai Metro Line 3 project with the cost now being Rs 33,405 crore.
Metro Line 3 is funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). With the new costs, JICA now will increase its contribution from Rs 13,235 crore to Rs 19,924 crore. By 2031, 17 lakh passengers are anticipated to travel by Metro Line 3 daily.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has won the bid to manage the operations of Mumbai Metro Line 3 for a period of 10 years. The DMRC will oversee managing the operation control centre, depot control centre, stations, running trains, maintaining trains and the entire metro system infrastructure and assuring passenger safety.
Around 110 services are being planned on the 12 km Phase -1 line that will have a travel time of 25 minutes.
Also, even after the entire line ( phase 1 and phase 2 ) are made operational, two stations in phase 2 namely Kalbadevi and Girgaum won’t be operational for the initial few months, cite media reports. The construction of these underground stations are expected to be finished only August or September 2024. However, the Metro 3 will have connections with suburban train stations at CSMT, Churchgate, Charni road, CSMT, Mumbai Central, Mahalakshmi etc.

Also known as the Green Line, Mumbai Metro Line 4 will connect Kasarvadavali in Thane to Wadala in south-central Mumbai. This Mumbai metro route will boost connectivity between Mumbai and Thane and decongest the local train network. The expected cost of this project is Rs 15,000 crore.

To be built at Rs 8,417 crore, this 24.9-km-long Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro-5 corridor, also known as the Orange Line.
The Mumbai Metro Line 5 will be in phases. The Phase-1 of Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Orange Line) will connect Thane to Bhiwandi and include the creek bridge. Phase-2 of Mumbai Metro Line 5 will connect Bhiwandi to Kalyan. MMRDA also is exploring the option of extending the Mumbai Metro Line 5 from Kalyan to Ulhasnagar. Once DPR is done and approval is received from the government, work on this stretch which spans 8 km will start.
The Orange Line has installed Mumbai’s first Metro viaduct that will pass over a water body. In Phase -1 , a 11 km viaduct the lines will connect six metro stations namely Balkum, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjurphata and Dhamankar Naka. A 3 km stretch of the Mumbai Metro Line 5 from Dhamankar Naka to Temghar will be constructed underground, as per a GR issued by the MMRDA. With this, the Mumbai Metro Line 5 will be a combination of elevated and underground route. While previously the entire 25 km stretch was planned to be elevated, presence of structures in this route that required demolition prompted the authority to opt for an underground route.

The 15.31 km long Metro Line will be operational between Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli (EEH) passing through Jogeshwari, WEH, and Powai. Several stations of this corridor are integrated with other metro corridors. For instance, Metro Line 2A at Shastri Nagar(infinity mall), Line7 at JVLR, Line 3 at Seepz area and Line 4 at Kanjurmarg (W).
MMRDA is also constructing a combined 2.58 km long road flyover below Metro Line 6 at a common pier in the road median to provide additional transport facilities. .
Also known as the Pink Line, this Mumbai Metro Line will connect the western suburbs with the eastern ones and will be the second west-east metro corridor, after the already operational Versova-Andheri Metro Station-Ghatkopar Metro Station section.

Known as the Red Line, Mumbai Metro Line 7 is a 33.5-km-long Mumbai metro route that will connect Dahisar with Andheri and further to the Mumbai International Airport.
The first phase of Metro 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East) was made operational for passengers from April 2, 2022 and phase -2 was inaugurated on January 19, 2023.

Mumbai Metro Line 8
Known as the Gold Line, this is a proposed Mumbai metro route between the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Cidco has started work on the DPR of Mumbai Metro Line 8. This will be the first mass rapid transit system connecting Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. Metro line from CSMIA to Mankhurd will be executed by MMRDA and the line from Mankhurd to NMIA will be executed by Cidco.
The approved length of this Mumbai metro route is 35 km and the project will be built at an expense of Rs 15,000 crore and daily footfall of 9 lakh passengers is expected.

The Mumbai Metro Line 9 is an extension of the Line 7 and Metro-2A (Dahisar to DN Road). This corridor will cost Rs 3,600 crore and will connect Gaimukh-Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road or Metro-10).
Mumbai Metro Line 9 phase-1 is expected to be operational by 2024 end. Also known as Red line extension, this 10.58 km corridor will connect Mumbai with Mira-Bhayandar and decongest the city entrance at Dahisar toll naka.
Divided in phases, phase 1 of Metro Line 9 will include Dahisar (E) to Kashigaon and phase-2 will include Kashigaon to Subhash Chandra Bose stadium. Media reports also mention the possibility of Metro Line 9 further being extended by 1.5-2 km till Uttan, where land for card shed is being scouted for.
Mumbai Metro line 9 has two interchanges- it interconnects Mumbai Metro Line 7 at Dahisar (East) and Mumbai Metro Line 10 at Miragaon metro station. The entire Metro line 9 operations are expected to start from December 2025.
Recently, the MMRDA also announced plans to extend Mumbai Metro Line 9 till its new train maintenance depot – Dongri, Thane District. This new introduction will have an extension of 4.9 km. It will feature two elevated stations at Murdha and Rai Goan on Uttan Road.
Also, the Dongri Depot spread across 41.36 hectare will be built that will maintain the metro trains for the entire Red Line connecting Dongri – Mira Bhayandar – Dahisar East – Gundavali – CSIA Terminal 2

Mumbai Metro Line 10 and 11 are extensions of Mumbai Metro Line 4, also known as the Green Line. These lines will connect Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road) and Wadala to CSMT. The Mumbai Metro 10 spans around 9.2 km . The estimated project cost is Rs 4,476 crore and the foundation stone was laid by PM Narendra Modi in 2019.
The MMRDA has appointed consultants for the Mumbai Metro Line 10 and awaiting environmental clearance. Once secured, the project is expected to be completed by 2027. As part of the design, the Mumbai Metro -10 will have a double decker design with the metro running on an elevated road between Gaimukh and Fountain Hotel on NH-8.

Maharashtra chief minister on March 3, 2024 laid the foundation stone for Mumbai Metro Line 12. An extension of the Mumbai Metro Line 5 or the Orange Line, this line will have 19 elevated stations and will cover 22.17 km.
Mumbai Metro Line 13
This is a proposed Mumbai metro project which will connect Mira Road with Virar. This 23-km-long Mumbai metro route is estimated to cost around 6,900 crores. At present, the detailed project report is being created for this route. The expected date of completion is in 2026. This will be also known as the Purple Line.
Mumbai Metro Line 14
This will be a 37.9 km metro corridor and will also be known as the Magenta Line. The Mumbai Metro Line 14. A few weeks back IIT-Mumbai was given the responsibility to do a peer review of the draft detailed project report submited by Milan Metro of Municipality of Milan.
The Mumbai Metro Line 14 will include 15 stations with 13 planned to be elevated, one underground and one at grade. It will pass through Badlapur, Ambernath, Nilje, Shil Phata, Mahape, Ghansoli, cross the Thane Creek and reach Kanjurmarg. Also, it will have three interchanges- Metro 4 of Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavali, Metro 6 of Swami Samarth Nagar-Jogeshwari Vikhroli-Kanjurmarg and the Kanjurmarg Railway Station. The Mumbai Metro Line 14 will also pass through transit oriented development nodes of Chikoli and others.

The Navi Mumbai Metro Line -1 started operations on November 17, 2023. The Navi Mumbai Metro Line runs from Belapur to Pendhar. This line is from Belapur to Pendhar and consists of 11 stations, 11 km track, a depot for maintenance at Taloja. The Navi Mumbai Metro starts at 6 AM and is available till 10 PM. The frequency of the Navi Mumbai Metro is 15 minutes.

The Navi Mumbai Metro has small trains—with three cars, expandable to six coaches—in the state. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) has been appointed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) for running services on Line 1 of the Navi Mumbai Metro project for 10 years.
Cidco in place of standard metro gauge will implement Metro Neo for Navi Mumbai Metro Lines 2, 3 and 4. According to a tweet by Cidco, Metro Neo is a Rubber tyre bi-articulated electric trolly-bus that is powered by overhead traction system. This mode of transport is designed for cities with population of around 20 lakh. This will be India’s first MRTS running on rubber tyes. The DPR for Navi Mumbai Metro Lines 2, 3 and 4 are expected to be prepared by March 2024, cite media reports.
Mumbai Metro Fare
To travel in Mumbai metro route 2A and 7, the minimum Mumbai Metro fare is Rs 10 and the maximum Mumbai Metro fare is Rs 50. The fare is decided on the basis of the distance in kms that the Mumbai metro route covers. The Mumbai metro trains operate between 6 AM and 10 PM with the Mumbai metro charges being Rs 10 for 0 to 3 km, Rs 20 for 3 to12 km and Rs 30 for 12 to 18km, Rs 40 for 18 to 24 km and Rs 50 for 24 to 30 km.

For now ticketing is handled via QR code-based mobile and paper tickets. Smart cards and app-based season tickets will be launched later.
Mumbai Metro: Various types of ticket
You can travel on Mumbai Metro using the various types of tickets-smart cards, tokens, the Mumbai1 app or the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC).
Smart card: Useful for everyday travel, you can top up the smart card with minimum Rs 100 and a security deposit of Rs 50. Travel cost will be deducted from the smart card every time you tap the card at the exits gate.
You can recharge your Mumbai Metro smart card using digital payment app on the Reliance Metro website or by using digital wallets like Paytm Google pay etc.
Tokens: Tokens are valid for only one day and once bought the person has to leave the same station within 20 min or from his destination station within 75 minutes.

NCLT disposes case against Mumbai Metro One
Reliance Infrastructure on Monday in a regulatory filing with the National Stock Exchange mentioned that the NCLT has disposed of the case filed by SBI Bank and IDBI following a one time settlement (OTS). The MMOPL had taken a loan of Rs 1,711 crore from six banks of which SBI and IDBI had filed a case with the NCLT over non-payment of dues. With this MMRDA can easily proceed with the take over process of MMOPL from Reliance Infra after paying Rs 4,000 crore. With this deal, MMRDA will be the sole owner of the Mumbai Metro One.

Maharashtra Cabinet okays buyout of R-Infra’s Mumbai Metro One stake
The Maharashtra Cabinet on March 11, 2024 approved the buyout of R-Infra’s 74% stake in Mumbai Metro One for Rs 4,000 crore. With the completion of this deal, R-Infra can exit the Mumbai Metro One project and MMRDA will solely own the Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd (MMOPL), the SPV through which Mumbai Metro One was constructed. Currently, MMRDA has 26% stake in MMOPL.
